Our 1st visit, and we loved it for many reasons, but, most of all, the great food! The menu had everything...clams, shrimp, 2 piece fish sandwiches, and great fries. Honestly, the prices were amazingly low, especially the add-ons. WE WILL BE GOING BACK SOON!
This is the first time eating at Captain D's. They have a Senior Menu which is unusual for a lot of restuarants. The service was right to each customer's table. No calling or yelling out a name or number. I had the fish and shrimp although I should not, and have not, eaten shrimp for many years because of high cholesterol. Maybe 4 little shrimp will not raise my cholesterol too high. The french fries were very good. I had corn and have not eaten corn in many years. Corn is fattening. This corn was on the cob, soggy, and maybe over-cooked. I remember how corn should look and taste although it has been many years. Corn should not be soggy, mushy, and taste as though it was boiled too long and allowed to sit in the water to become infused with water. It should be dry, crisp, firm, and just boiled with adding a little butter, salt, and maybe pepper or seasoning after removing it from the boiling water. Their boiled corn need some work. Stay with the french fries. Their fish was nice, crispy, and tasty. I hope it was not Swaii fish which is grown in sewerage ponds in Vietnam, processed, frozen, and shipped to American. The Vietamese must be having a big laugh over growing fish in their sewers and feeding them to Americans. The hush puppies tasted "off" and smelled weird. I wrapped those in a paper napkin to take home to the birds. Now I know not to order shrimp, corn, and decline hush puppies or take those to the birds. I can order catfish and french fries or baked potato. No problem there.
Rachel helped us tonight through the drive thru! She was awesome. My husband had never eaten at Captain Ds so he had a lot of questions. She was so patient and super sweet!
As good as I remembered! Everything I've tried has been fresh and hot. I like that they offer sides like green beans, okra and mac and cheese instead of just fries, too.
Fish plates are served with a big helping of cracklings which is nice. I don't remember Captain D's doing that before.
Sweet tea is good, everything else is Pepsi, yuck.
Also, it's nice to have somewhere other than Fish River that does real hush puppies and not frozen little balls of sadness from Sysco.
Overall it was a pleasant experience. Ordering was easy, the restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly, and the food was hot. My only complaint would be the menu. I understand not having the price listed as seafood tends to fluctuate constantly. Still, it would be easier for the customers and the staff to say give me a number one three-piece versus the menu option's name. That and the $3.30 I got charged for a large drink...woof. I haven't eaten at a Captain D's in decades and thought it strange one was opening here in foley, so close to the coast and local gulf seafood, but the place has been packed every day I drive home from work. So I finally decided to stop and see what all the fuss was about.
