Really good BBQ. Love their ribs. Pork and smoked chicken are great too. Their sliced turkey is not something I'd order again, though it had a good flavor, it reminded me a little too much of lunch meat... Greens are very tasty. Really like the slaw. Fried catfish is usually pretty good. Larger pieces of catfish, but nicely fried.

The BBQ at Rodney’s is unique. I had the whole hog which is very tender and moist. If you are looking for some char or bark on your BBQ pork you won’t get it here. They have 2 sauces - Rodney’s eastern NC vinegar and pepper, and a red sauce. Both were good. My side were baked beans which were quite good - Smokey and boys of BBQ in it, plus collard greens which were average. All in all a good lunch. I think I will try the ribs next time and the French fries as the guy next to me said they were very good and they looked good.

Had a business trip in Tuscaloosa, so I flew in a day early to try this place. I haven't been to the original but this place met and exceeded my expectations.

First let me preface that I'm from Texas so beef is King and it's missing from the menu. But I didn't come here for brisket. The ribs were spot on, perfectly tender and the right amount of effort to pull the meat from the bone. Flavor was great as well.

The whole hog pulled pork was moist and delicious. I could eat either all day long.

I also got beans and fries. Both were very good but let's not kid ourselves, you don't fly half way across the country for beans...

There were 3 sauces on the table all were good but the meat is good enough you don't need the sauce. (No Alabama white sauce on the table, I didn't order chicken so I'm not sure if it is served with it or not).

Atmosphere was fine, doesn't have the old school vibe of a 100 year old joint but there staff was super friendly and Rodney happened to be there the day I was there. First he was eating lunch too (always a good sign that the owner likes the food), second he took time to talk shop with me and show me the pits etc.

Highly recommend. Remember every day is a good day.

So glad you're in Birmingham! This is one of my favorite places to visit when I'm in town. The restaurant is always clean & the food is always good! The employees have been super friendly. I finally got a chance to meet Mr. Scott on my last visit, very nice guy. Fingers crossed on a future Dallas TX location!

We went around lunch today and I had the pound of ribs with a side of macaroni and greens.

While the ribs were cooked really well, apart from the Kathy sauce, none of the other sauces were to my liking.

Macaroni was okay, but lacked a lot of taste. Kathy sauce on top made it a lot better.

The greens were different and not something I’ll get again: It may just be a cultural difference but they tasted oddly sour.

Service was awesome though. Parking was easy. Restaurant and restroom were really clean!

Ultimately, James Beard Award or not, I won’t be going out of my way for Rodney Scott’s.

BBQ wise, nobody has beat Bob Sykes in Bessemer, AL yet.
