After a lot of anticipation of waiting for this place to open, we finally made it in for a try. My previous experience (and only) experience with kolaches has been serving Shipley Do-Nuts kolaches at COTH. Do not go into American Kolaches with the anticipation of the kolaches being the same as Shipley. Shipley makes theirs as sort of a pig in a blanket style, there are more of a stuffed roll or “dumpling”. With that being said, American Kolache has a very simple store, they have a shelf of kolaches behind the counter similar to a Dunkin Donuts. They have roughly 15-20 items to pick from, mostly kolaches, however there are a few cookies and other pastries that all look delicious. The kolaches are fundamentally a thin yeast roll stuffed with various ingredients. We tried a sausage egg and cheese, bacon mac and cheese, spinach artichoke, and a meatball. All were amazing, especially the meatball. The bread is light and fluffy, the stuffings don’t make the bread soggy, and the flavors are all good. The only downside is the kolaches are not served warm, however, they will warm them if requested. I imagine this is so the bread does not get soggy from the ingredients steaming the bun, however, that’s just a guess. I will vouch that these are all handmade, and fresh, anyone who bakes bread can notice these are obviously not frozen.
The building has a counter, soda fountain, coffee dispenser, and two indoor tables. Give them a try sometime, we enjoyed it and hope they stick around as it’s a great option for a fun treat. I am glad they chose Vestavia as their home.

    Explanation:
I gave 4 instead of 5 stars for two things.
1.) It would be nice if the kolaches were kept warm, not necessarily steaming hot. 2.) The egg in the breakfast kolaches are made from powdered egg (still tasty though).
