    Welcome to Pie Heaven.
But let's take a step back.
There aren't a lot of places to check out in Prairie Creek. But that's changing in spades. We now have the Beaver Lake Bistro (which I also reviewed) and Mr. G's Sandwich Shop (that I have yet to try). And the Fat Chef is supposed to be opening on... ok, they're really stealth about throwing out a date!
But back to the deliriously wonderful and amazingly delicious pies at Ventris.
The really cool part is that if you have a boat, you can dock it at Ventris! But even if you don't, and even if you live in Fayetteville or even farther, it's worth the drive.
The first time we visited we bought both lunch and pies. While I LOVE the pies, I don't remember the food. I did remember that I felt it was overpriced.
    But the pies overshadow everything.
After one bite you know it's something special.
I have tried the caramel apple a la mode, coconut cream, and chocolate. If ever there's been an "I'll have what she's having" moment in a restaurant, this is it.
Immediately you know that these pies are homemade and that there's pure love in there (try it, you won't roll your eyes then!).
And here's the secret. The pie baker is an 80-year-old grandma. You see it, right?
It's the best crust I have ever had. And here's why. The crust is light and crispy and is more of a pastry crust than the pie crust we're used to – sometimes soggy but often soft with no crisp anywhere except at the top.
My theory is that the crust is a pastry crust that is nearly identical to a Napoleon. Those are the super shmancy pastries that are always behind glass. It's crust layered with custard and a zig-zag black and white decoration on top.
But it's not just the crust, the pie itself is delicious and it's impossible to have a favorite. As we were going back and forth between the caramel apple a la mode and the coconut cream, we vacillated between the two. It went something like this:
Me: They are both SO GOOD!
Fiance: I know! Which is your favorite?
Me: (as I'm eating the caramel apple) I'd give the slight edge to the caramel apple. I love that dutch apple topping, so cinnamon--y and brown sugar-y. And that caramel drizzle is amazing. (switching to the coconut cream) Man, this has got to be the best coconut cream pie I've ever had. That crust is so buttery and light and full of so many layers! I don't think I've ever seen a crust like this! And not only is their toasted coconut on top, it's actually IN the filling. OK, I have to give this coconut cream the edge.
And this continued, back and forth, the entire time – yep, definitely the apple. OK, this coconut is the bomb. I'm going coconut. But the apple is warm and feels like a hug. I'm back to apple! Um... the depths of flavors in the coconut... Going with coconut!
    What more can I say?
    Nothing.
    Go.
    Go to Pie Heaven.
P.S. I also wanted to throw in that Ventris hosts 4th of July fireworks over the lake. It's so beautiful. Definitely try to make it if you're in town.
