An LA institution! Always long lines, but worth the wait. Lots of options for sandwiches, sides (pickles, pickled eggs, cole slaw, potato salad, etc.), and desserts. Consistent quality. Pies are decent, too. For some reason, I always find it easy to over-order and over-eat here!
A must place to stop. I have been going here since the late 60s. Whenever we were anywhere near Los Angeles we would stop there for a meal. My grandparents would drive in from Orange County. They had been going there since before they moved there when the 101 freeway was built. Dont let the rustic appearance scare you away. There is always a fast moving line up of people waiting for a delicious sandwich. It could be locals, construction workers, or people stopping by after an evening at the theater. The food is delicious no matter what time of day. Don't miss out on this little slice of local LA pie. These are the best sandwiches I have ever had.
First time here, the lines are outrageous at first glance but they tend to move quickly. I got the beef dip ($8.50) and it was GREAT! Didn't try any of the sides but they have plenty to choose from. Also their Dijon mustard is really good, if you like it really strong! Definitely would go again. They do not take card, only cash; however, there is an ATM available.

This restaurant does not take credit cards.
There is a sign on the door that says cash
only and it points out that there is an ATM
inside the restaurant. What it does not
tell you is that there is an extra $2.25
fee to use the ATM.
The dining room itself contains wood tables
and stools and wood shavings on the floor,
which provides slightly rustic atmosphere.
There are ample tables and booths available.
The food itself is delicious. The portions
and prices are reasonable.
