It is OK... Yes, just OK. It's not like a regular Russian restaurant (Traktir charges cork fee), but it's also not like anything as it was in Chablis. Last year Valentine's dinner at Chablis was a very romantic evening, this year experience was not romantic at all. Food is good, service is trying their best (Thank You guys!), music is not right at all... One word, it's a Traktir (see Wikipedia) :)
Came in for dinner with friends to this place back in late August. Not sure if this was an off day but the experience was rather disappointing.
The decor and organization of the restaurant was nice with the outdoor patio being a nice touch but this is where it ended. Took us about 10 minutes to get the menus. Ok. Fine. It happens. The menu is pretty standard nothing particularly standing out. So we weren't looking for a big meal so ordered Solyanka, Pelmeni, a Salad, and a main to share.
Can't say anything particularly bad to say about Salad or the mains. They were solidly done but somewhat blandish but Solyanka was so salty that my wife, who puts salt on everything, already seasoned or not, sent the dish back saying that it was way to salty, not spicy but salty. Pelmeni also tasted like they were bought in the store and set in the freezer for some time.
I would have expected better.
Enjoyable. From food to ambiance to service. Pricey. But enjoyable.
This is one of my go-to places in Los Angeles. I can highly recommend it. Calling ahead for reservations is a good idea, as this place can get full, but we've been successfully accommodated as a walk in on a few occasions.
Food -
The best Russian food I've had in America. If you know Russian food, you know what to get. If you don't, I can highly recommend the Borscht and the Stroganoff - it's a classic introduction to Russian food. Mors is also a fruity (non-alcoholic) drink that's quite hard to find in the US and is a very unique taste. The herring and vodka are also great.
Service -
It's a Russian restaurant. Expect it to be a culturally authentic experience. ;) You're not going to find the same over the top friendliness that you would at most American restaurants. The service is quick, to the point, and doesn't bother you until you need it.
Excellent Russian food experience. Nice clean place. Full bar and excellent coffee
