No exaggeration: the Hanini’s sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in my life. Complex flavors, well balanced, and inventive. (Reminds me of Yotam Ottohlenghi) The fried onions were hot and crisp - they were a wonderful foil to the fresh, cool veggies.
I went with my wife and toddler. Counter service was excellent and welcoming.
The breakfast burrito was also great.
Authentic Cafe and Takeaway is DELICIOUS! I had to coordinate food for a work event and stumbled upon ACAT by chance and they exceeded my every expectation. With only a few days notice Rodger and his crew were able to supply us with 80 sandwiches that my team and I thoroughly enjoyed. My personal favorite was the Cuban but everyone raved about The Nonna, The Reuben, and the Cali Bahn Mi just as much. Thanks again Rodger and the whole Authentic Cafe and Takeaway team!
Roger is a true LA culinary legend and not only have I followed him since the wonderful and sorely-missed original Authentic Cafe in LA in the 1990s-2000s, I was actually a customer of his dad, Abner, who ran a butcher shop and supplied top LA restaurants (including Spago if I’m not mistaken) with incredible merguez and other sausages. All this to say, Roger’s culinary roots run deep and he is a true LA original.
Food-wise, you can’t go wrong with anything.
I’m just hoping to see the original Authentic Cafe’s Chicken Tortilla soup (best one EVER) make a come-back, as well as the ridiculously-good wood-grilled burger, the grilled pizza, the flan and the sandia/watermelon aguas frescas. All of these were my go-tos.
In short, run, don’t walk and try Roger’s food. You’ll thank me.
We love grabbing lunch here! We have tried a lot on their menu and it’s all delicious. Definitely would recommend the Hanina’s Sammie and the Banh Mi!
Ordered the Cuban and it was soooooo good! The new owner is a highly passionate chef and overall seems like a very nice guy. Bonus is that he's a former employee of the previous owner. Would highly recommend!
