Me and my family love this place so much! We used to go to the one in Hollywood which was farther away so when this one opened up we were so happy! Their breakfast tacos are really something else!
As a native Texan, Home State tugs at the heartstrings. They very deservedly won best flour tortilla in Southern California from the KCRW Masa Madness competition, For which they probably displayed a plaque at the store entrance. For my money and taste buds, their breakfast tacos with or without eggs beat out their anytime tacos. The Guadalupe (chorizo, eggs, and cheese) reminds me so much of the spicy delicacies found at little taco carts in Austin. Home State's breakfast tacos are well balanced, wrapped in perfectly fluffy flour tortillas, and a nice portion. Their queso approximates authentic Texas queso, but I find it a little runny compared to the thick, creamy (admittedly derived from processed cheese) staple of east and central Texas. The charro beans Cowboy Cup is EVERYTHING. I was really impressed with all of the textures and flavors achieved, but not muddled, by topping beans with pickled onions, guacamole, jalapeños, and pico. Don't skip on the frozen margarita for an even more authentic experience. Seating is pretty limited, as you might be relegated to the patio on a breezy cool day.
Came here to meet a friend after work. Ordered a spicy frozen Paloma a brisket taco and a side of queso with chips. They have plenty of seating outside and inside. Yummy food and drinks, good service, clean place.
Food was pretty tasty but overall lacking spice and heat. A lot of the focus is on the flour tortilla and cheese. Trinity taco was a winner. Queso was quality as well.
Born and raised in Texas, I moved here 5 years ago, and have finally found a place that serves breakfast tacos. They capture the Austin vibe well also. I would give their Queso a solid “B”. Not the best I’ve ever had, but certainly the best you can find in California. The breakfast tacos I put in the same category. The salsa was mediocre. I have no doubt that Californians will love this spot. As a Texan, it was good enough to temporarily quell the homesick blues. I’ll certainly be back, and I’m a bit of an elitist when it comes to all things Texas. Happy to give another misplaced Texan five stars.
