The food is delicious, the service is very good, and the ambiance is more intimate than it was several years ago (before the CIA moved the restaurant to the gatehouse from the main building). The menu items are of the current trend: limited but diverse selection of dishes, with each featured food having a supporting cast of bits of intriguing ingredients, seemingly with no ingredient shared among multiple dishes. The recommended wine pairings were good, but I wish they would not use port-type glasses for ALL of the dessert wines; the sauternes bouquet wasn't accessible in that glass. Overall, we enjoyed our meal.
The CIA team was spot on. The delivery and attention to detail was perfect. We bought a nice bottle of wine to go with meal. A bit expensive but it complimented the meal perfectly. Nice job CIA
Very good restaurant. The restaurant is run by the students of the school so there are bound to be little hiccups. We went during finals week so I’m pretty sure they were being graded for their final and you could tell. Everyone seemed really nervous and didn’t want to mess up. Staff was very polite and got us whatever we asked for. A couple of them were so nervous that they were fumbling around with their words to the point is was hard to understand. Food was excellent and priced as such. Although, I feel they could have charged more if it wasn’t run by the school. It feels really high class. The portions were small but after three of them and trying my girlfriends, we both left really full. Recommend as a fancy date night if you don’t want to break the bank too much.
Torn between three and four stars. Pros: good food, very well priced prix fixe menu, and excellent super-fresh ingredients.
Cons: amateur service, and expensive wines. The 20% tip inclusion in the bill also didn’t resonate well with their “no tipping” policy (they are all students after all). Lastly, the gatehouse is a small space, separate from the main hall of the Culinary Institute.
The service was good. The food was good, though the sandwich I ordered came with a bit too much horseradish. The building is kept clean and the people who work/learn there are always ready to answer questions. If you a looking for a college degree in cooking culinary studies, this is a good place to go to.
