Very Authentic, but you can get Americanized, very good food, service was great in my experience. I had spicy beef and hot pot spicy beef.
Big portion sizes! Probably the most authentic Szechuan restaurant in Tustin/Santa Ana area, definitely rivals Irvine for authenticity! Pretty small inside so it could be a wait unless you elect to sit outside, but bundle up coz they dont have heat lamps, and the food gets served quickly. But you wont feel cold for long because the food hits the spot for spiciness! I seriously feel like I'm visiting Szechuan again when the food comes out.
Had the spicy cabbage, frog, and shrimp fried rice. The fried rice was just ok, but the other two dishes were great. The frog had a great texture and didn't taste fishy with a good numbing spice profile. The cabbage was actually my favorite. The staff was nice. Order a Beijing yogurt. It's just a sweet yogurt, but can offset the spice.
I went here on a fluke.. simply hungry and wanted to wait out north bound traffic on the freeway. Anyway, Tasty Zone serves Szechuan cuisine, which tends to be spicy. The restaurant is inside a shopping center on Bristol Ave in Santa Ana surrounded by markets, fast food restaurants and other shopping establishments.
The menu is filled with various hot pot items, as well as dishes featuring meats like lamb, pork, pig innards, beef and chicken. Some include vegetables.. and there are a few vegetable only dishes available. What they all have in common is they are spicy - the majority are shown with smashed red peppers adorning them. The aromas from these dishes are wonderful. In particular, I recommend the fried spicy and sour cabbage, the spicy and cold cucumber salad, the green beans and the spicy lamb (or beef) with cumin. The ingredients are simple and fresh. I simply order food with little oil and salt to avoid the one problem found in much restaurant prepared cuisine. Service is easy to get a hold of here and friendly. Prices are inexpensive. Obviously if you are adverse to spice you can ask staff to minimize it or remove it completely. Tasty Zone is a casual place and not very large, but with great quality food. Service is quick and overall an excellent place to come for an inexpensive and delicious meal. Outdoor seating is plentiful and kind of romantic.
