Great ambience. Lovely food. Between two of us we had Ahi tower, signature salad, and a pancake. There were several dates in the salad, and many date (and other) products in the adjoining shop. There is a nice garden nearby with Nativity scenes. You get free entry there if you dine here. I wouldn't pay to go in, but it's nice.

Not just for date shakes. The little cafe in the back is so cute and the menu offers a good variety of choices for the whole family. Be sure also do the walk either while waiting or as I prefer after eating.

The food was only so so. I had a cheeseburger and it was only okay. Another person in my party got chicken tenders. They came out raw. The staff got him new ones quickly and took the chicken tenders off the bill. They said they were very sorry and the chef was talking to the kitchen staff. I was pleased with how the reacted to the situation. The date shakes were good but a little on the sweet side. You should get one to share or a smaller one because they are very big and hard to finish.

The Cafe at Shields is probably the finest place for breakfast/lunch in the eastern part of the Coachella Valley. The menu is full of delicious and often unique items as well as some traditional meals with a twist.

I had the chicken and waffle, a traditional southern item. But at Shield's, it is served with spicy syrup that adds a zip you might not expect. The chicken is batter dipped southern style and is both peppery and a bit spicy. I suspect that the heat may come from the syrup. It is moist, very crispy and delicious. The waffle is good, but unexceptional of itself, but made outstanding with the "fire honey infused" syrup. The bacon, 2 long strips covered with syrup, was also excellent.

Don't be put off by the frequent "spicy" references. It is mild and particularly notable for its unexpected presence, not its level of heat.

Service at Shield's is always excellent and, on pleasant days, dining in the garden is a wonderful way to begin a day. On the rare bad day, inside seating is available.
