This family owned spot is my go to breakfast place, and in the dozen+ times I’ve been here over the years I’ve never been disappointed. Everything on their menu is fresh and delicious, with their huevos rancheros being my personal favorite. Can’t wait to try the new ‘Secret Garden’ patio for breakfast or lunch!
We were anticipating a nice Mexican lamb meal, but were let down. The caldo seemed to be watered down and no noticeable seasoning and bland flavor. Next was the lamb meat for tacos, though it was perfectly cooked, it too was very bland (a little salt would have gone a long way). Finally, the lamb flautas, pretty good, generously filled tortillas, but again missing that special something. Nice lady helped us out, and everything was well packaged to go, I just feel flavor wise, it was an off day.
A friend recommended this place, and she is right. Great food and great service. I wish I could go there every day!! Great tacos with hand made tortillas ?!! Will be back ASAP!
El Borrego is one of the very best Mexican restaurants you'll ever eat at.
Their "Lamb Mixiote" is a braised-meat lover's dream of soft, melty lamb swimming in lamb juices, broken-down collagen, and Aztec-Mexican seasoning. A lot of time and love go into preparing this dish, and it is a superb stand-out on a lamb-oriented menu that would be fantastic even without it.
One of my favorites on that menu is the Green Pozole, a somewhat rare dish in San Diego, despite the popularity of red pozole around this area. The Green Pozole at El Borrego features both succulent pork meat and pork rinds in a fragrant broth that is a lot less overbearing than the red broths in red pozole. Another favorite of mine is the Huitlacoche Quesadilla, which has an excellent earthy flavor that is well met with some of El Borrego's habanero-pickled onions. Again, an item you won't find at most other Mexican restaurants in San Diego.
If you're on the fence about coming here, don't think another second about it, just do it -- it'll be difficult for you to find better Mexican food anywhere in this city.
El Borrego has authentic Mexican food that leave you wanting more! I highly recommend this spot for a sit-down meal with friends and family. The place is filled with bright colors and attentive service--a wonderful experience overall.
