After reading the Eater feature on Eko Kitchen last week, I made a reservation to check it out for Sunday dinner. I have no prior experience with Nigerian food but I was excited to try it. I'm glad that Eko Kitchen fills this culinary gap in SF.
I had the Sunday Supper Combo ($15), which came with jollof rice, naija fried rice, naija native rice, honey glazed chicken wings, and fried plantains. The price was good but portion size was relatively small. I really enjoyed the texture and sweetness of the plantains as well as how much spices were in each of the rice dishes. The chicken wings were tiny and tasted very average to me. He ordered a side of the special, which was some sort of goat stew ($10). I don't know if I've ever had goat before but he always talks about how much he loves goat meat and I'm glad we could try some here. We both thought that the goat could've been more tender but overall, the flavor was excellent.
Eko Kitchen is a very special place and I definitely recommend people give it a chance.
Really skimped on portion size (particularly the pounded yams), which seems weird for a $15 (base) takeout dish. The flavor seemed off, but I haven't had this particular dish before, so that could just be ignorance on my part.
This place is amazing. I cant believe I'm only just finding it. The food is ridiculously good and they are really good people there. Everyone is so nice. I went last weekend and the menu was traditional Nigerian classics, which is exactly what I was looking for. This week I had to come back. They did a different menu this time, Afro-Latin. Equally as fantastic. Cant wait to see what they cook up next week!
Tasty and spicy ???? Nigerian food.
We really enjoyed Eko Kitchen. It was refreshing to to eat and experience something so unique in San Francisco. The food was also delicious! The flavors and combinations were not like I've tried before and it does seem to be authentic Nigerian food. Definitely get the puff puffs for dessert! YUM
