At Fuego, the parking was ample, and the place was welcoming & quite accessible. The staff are very pleasant, friendly, and take obvious pride in this "Mom & Pop" place. It is a relatively "undiscovered" culinary gem in our area.

Their version of a Banh Mi is beyond reproach & I would disregard all, or most detractors, since they either: A) Are possibly tourists who travel hundreds of miles from either SF San Jose [Story Rd.] or LA's Orange County's Garden Grove areas; or B) Are locals who are relatively clueless about a "proper" Banh Mi & go for quantity [like a big boring sando made with pathetic Boar's Head] over quality [like here with homemade quality].

For us locals, the Banh Mi here is stellar. While there is/was 1-2 places within hundred miles of here that had "Banh Mi", run by Vietnamese, they are often disappointing, and can be lacking in some ways [such as lacking proper crunch...or one has to almost beg for fish sauce!].

After living here for several years, with few decent Banh Mi's options, I & many other locals, love this place.

After one walks in and spies the specially made mini-French Baguette Breads, one's hope for a tasty treat is taken up a dozen notches. As one chats with the staff, please request for it to be toasted, & asked for extra Mayo. One can tell that they really know what they were doing, since they have the proper essential ingredients, including savory fermented Anchovy/ Fish sauce. Fish sauce, is really hard to find in this area, but can be had at one of the only Asian markets in the area, called Debu, in nearby Pismo Beach. It is an essential ingredient in Thai, Vietnamese, and other asian cuisine.

Get a nice humble table outside, take one bite and you may not believe your taste buds, nor that you are in SLO County. The Umami Savory ingredients are delightful, as they harmonize with the crunch of both the French bread, and the pickled delightful snap of daikon/ carrot slivers. The Cilantro makes a nice note, as the amazingly tender tasty marinated Pork sings to your taste buds. The mouth feel of the creamy Mayo balances out the fresh green spicy Jalapeño slices. Adding Sirarchi sauce introduces some nice garlic undertones to this experience.

This Sando will likely evoke a joyous culinary symphony that unfolds in your mouth. Fuego is almost like an uncharted Oasis, in a desert of quality ethnic foods. You may imagine that you hear the main theme song of "2001- A Space Odyssey", as one takes a big bite!

This new wonderful place is open most days a week and is only a short drive from hotels & homes. People may come anytime for many more ultra-fresh ultra-yummy Banh Mi's.

This Banh Mi is basically a well crafted gourmet version of the typical Vietnamese take on it, whether it be chains in CA/HI, or Vietnamese Deli/shops in San Jose or Garden Grove [where I have personally ate countless versions of these gems over a lifetime].

In Vietnamese areas, which are hundreds of miles away, and hundreds of dollars away, [in terms of gas/hotel], can you get a heftier version, more ingredients, at a lower price?

Yes & No...is the answer. Many of the Vietnamese places go for quantity over quality, and use cheaper fattier ingredients. A typical Combo Banh Mi in San Jose is no longer that cheap either, since you are going to pay about X $ for an everything one [which was my fav till Fuego came onto the local scene]. Typical Banh Mi's use fatty cheap cold cuts and relatively cheap canned Pate, so along with all the Mayo, you have almost unrelenting fat. Even the pickled Daikon & Carrot is often limp....especially after a 4+ hour drive, to take some Sandos back to the SLO area.

For locals it is worth it?

    That is an unqualified ABSOLUTELY!

You are blessed with getting a gourmet quality lovingly crafted locally made work of art for almost pocket change. In this area, you rarely find anything like this quality for such a reasonable price. Since a typical trip for us locals, to a true Vietnamese area, would cost hundreds [gas, hotel, incidentals], Fuego is a relative bargain [& will pay for multiple Fuego Banh Mi's].

Furthermore, the local Kombucha is a welcomed refreshing addition & compliments the Banh Mi.

Just stopped by to pick up my go to from this place, their tuna sandwich. While the owner was wrapping up my meal another gentleman walked in. He mentioned it was his first time there, I said "well then you've gotta try a sandwich", he said he didn't have any money. Without blinking the owner offered to make him one. Great food, local small business and human owners.

    Amazing tri-tip sandwich.
The meat, the chimichurri sauce, and the roll. All perfect.
I will go back to try the bhan mi and the pork.
    Really nice people too.

Best tri tip Sandwich I’ve ever had. So unique and different from the traditional tri tip sandwich. I highly recommend eating Fuego’s food. Wonderful experience.
