Cannot speak on the cafe part of this establishment but the bakery was good! We had the German chocolate torte, cream puffs, and apple strudel. All were very good! Friendly and helpful staff as well. They have their own parking in back of establishment for customers, very convenient.
I originally came here in early-March, when it was still pretty chilly in Helen. The service was wonderful, the food was great. My boyfriend and I came for several meals during our 3-day trip.
I came back to Hofer's in mid-June with my sister and her family. We sat outside this time because my dog was with us. The first thing I noticed was the musicians they had on the patio were very loud. I couldn't even hold a conversation with the people at my table. No wonder we were the only people sitting outside!
Hofer's also only allowed you to order from an "outdoor" menu, which was very limited. This was a bummer because I was excited for my sister to try the awesome/extensive menu. We even asked if there was any way around this rule and were given a "Sorry, hon.". The food was still good, but I was definitely disappointed with the second visit. I was embarrassed that the place I had raved about was not very accommodating or guest-friendly.
I think a real reason for the difference in what I experienced is the slower winter months forces the restaurant to be more hospitable and friendly. In the summer, there are so many tourists, they no longer have the need to provide such excellent service.
A visit to Helen Georgia isn't complete without a stop at Hofer's Bakery. This is a traditional German bakery and delicatessen with everything from sweet to savory. Order from their menu or buy direct from the bakery and eat at one of there indoor or outdoor dining areas. The traditional strudels and shortbread pastries are delicious.
This would be a great place to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or engagement. Just pick a cake from the offered selection or special order for something unique.
The raspberry, cherry or apricot shortbread triangles are sweet and tangy with a melt in your mouth crumble. Chocolate Eclairs and massive Cream Puffs filled with Bavarian cream will tempt you from the display case.
The deli case directly opposite the pastry case (sorry and failed to picture it) is stuffed with German cheeses and meats. This is really a place for everyone. I stood and watched as children gazed wide eyed at the treats.
Great food, wonderful atmosphere, tastefully decorated, clean dining room. If you want to try something different, get the Bavarian Cold Cuts breakfast. I tried it for the first time, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised! Also had their homemade corned beef hash and it was delicious!
Dog friendly front deck for those who choose to bring their four-legged fur babies.
