I am from California, We have been staying between Oahu and Maui for the last four months. We have had MANY Malasadas, and let me tell you, Penny's Malasdadas are the best we have had, and we have been around these two islands many times. DELICIOUS!
They're good, filling is a bit lacking compared to Leonard's Bakery and slightly more expensive. The texture reminds me of the Time Hortons cruller. The best was the strawberry pineapple and cinnamon sugar.
We got three malasadas with pineapple filling, three with coconut creme. My girlfriend and I tried the coconut creme ones first and it was immediately one of the best foods I’ve eaten. I could see it on her face too. Pineapple filling was a second favorite to the coconut creme, but still incredibly good.
We visited the nearby Polynesian Cultural Center, but had the two malasadas we leftover on our minds the whole time. When we got home, we ate them first thing.
Great dough, great filling, and of course the dusting of sugar coat, absolutely unreal I didn’t know these existed before my trip to Honolulu. No donut can compare.
The malasadas here are huge and fluffy. I have seen a few reviews mention the lack of filling in these, but we absolutely did not have that problem. They had the perfect amount. The filling flavors change daily I believe. On the day we went we tried pineapple guava. It was excellent. I liked it more than I expected to. We also got a few plain ones with cinnamon sugar, and just sugar. All were excellent.
If you love Malasadas like I do then go here. I only get cinnamon and sugar, it's the best when hot. But do try the filled ones. Friendly and also the Malasadas are very airy inside and big.
