The Berghoff Restaurant

Solid German American cuisine. The Cafe in the basement is fast and they serve ALL the classic dishes that made the reputation of this well loved restaurant so many years ago. Eating upstairs often requires a reservation, but it is nice to sit in the same dining room that has been used and appreciated for such a very long time.

I hadn't been there in quite some time and I had fond memories of what it was. Old world feel of times gone by. But, I wasn't disappointed, good food, adequate service and very good beer.

Classic Chicago restaurant since the 1800s. Sit upstairs to enjoy table service and house brewed draft beers/flights. Downstairs there's the "cafe", which is more casual counter service and you can take away or grab a table. In either location, you will enjoy great food from a large menu that includes German food and much non-German food. On the German side, it's one of the few places in the city to get real Bratwurst (not Italian sausage) and German potato salad (not mayo-based). Also, upstairs or down you'll talk to employees who've been there for 20+ years, and have seen and heard some things in their hallowed halls.

Food was delicious. Great variety without being overwhelming. Good descriptions of entrees; high quality food and preparation. Atmosphere was lovely. Only complaint was service. Had to ask multiple times for drink refills. Plates cleared but no server offered dessert; had to ask for menu. No explanation of food or drink specialties. This is an iconic Chicago restaurant. Would have loved staff to include bits of history and offer suggestions on signature dishes and drinks.

The food was cooked to perfection. It was delicious. The wait staff is friendly and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. I have gone here since I was a child, and they do a great job maintaining the standards and characteristics of the restaurant. It never disappoints. If you have never been here before you are missing out!
