My wife and I ate at Khmai Cambodian Fine Dining before we went to the Theo Ubique Theater across the street. Apparently, it had opened fairly recently. I had never heard of a Cambodian restaurant in Chicago before. But it was outstanding! The food was delicious and reasonably priced, and the staff was very helpful explaining what each dish was and making recommendations. It was spacious, with high ceilings, and tastefully and authentically decorated. The kitchen was flexible enough to make us tasting portions of multiple dishes. We loved it and will definitely return.

Delicious hidden gem in the neighborhood. Like you wouldn't even know its there if you were driving. Creative flavors and unique cuisine. If you like other Asian style food, you will love this place.

My first experience with Cambodian cuisine, and it was terrific. The dining room was cool and relaxing on a blazing day, with soft traditional Cambodian music playing in the background.

I had the appetizer portion of egg rolls, four delicious crunchy cigars served with a tangle of pickled vegetables, virtually a tangy side salad, and a tangy soy dipping sauce.

For main, I had an off-menu plate of sauteed Pork belly served with a generous scoop of fried rice and a small salad, with another dipping sauce that I didn't really need, but it disappeared anyway. It's way too tasty to leave behind.

My server and the owner both checked in frequently, perhaps worried I didn't like it. I'm just an annoyingly slow eater.

This would be a great place for a low-key date, but even better for a small group. The portions are perfect for passing around so everyone gets a healthy taste of everything, like an Asian tapas bar.

Khmai also has a full bar, with a list of custom cocktails. Most entrees are in the $15 range, with generous appetizers under $10.

When I return, which I will soon, I'm planning to try the sauteed eggplant and beef skewers...and hopefully move through the menu all summer.

One quick note. This is not spicy food...it hits sweet, salty and sour notes and well, so far at least.

This was one of the greatest meals I have had in a while. The flavors were layered, complex, and oh so satisfying! The sauces really stood out to me with a tamarind and chili sauce that complimented my meal of ground chicken and eggplant perfectly. It was all to die for! The meal was so comforting, like I was eating at a family table. The chef and staff were absolutely fantastic. Service was splendid! I will return with friends undoubtedly. I already know what I want to order next!

It’s so exciting to finally have authentic Khmer food available in Chicago! The food was so so delicious - the egg rolls even had tarot root in it which def made it feel like home. I got the beef skewers, papaya salad, and Cambodian sausage with rice. The skewers and sausage were literally perfect. The papaya salad was good but I wish there was a spicy option and limes on the side to add on for more sourness if we wanted. Overall, so good!

The only issue we had was the service was quite slow. It was the first day, however, so I think the restaurant was just getting settled. The waitress was kind and we even got a free drink. Love this place and I will come back to experience this again!
