Great deli with an amazing sandwich selection. I enjoyed the smoked salmon and brie.
I am SO HAPPY to have learned about this place! It’s actually not that far from me, but a hidden gem as far as I’m concerned. They have just the food you need to fill your belly without breaking the bank and leaving with a smile on your face. I got the Havarti Dill sandwich last time and have been dreaming about it ever since! They have been in business for 75 years and I know have seen some hard times with Covid so please support them if you can. I hear their cookies are divine, too!
A fantastic spot for takeout lunch, Al's makes simple sandwiches with incredibly high-quality ingredients. Every sandwich is great, though the croissants are something special. Their soups and cookies are also excellent, and the half sandwich half soup deal is one of the best deals in Evanston. The place can get busy on a nice day and the sandwiches can take a while, but they are worth it. They now take mobile and credit card payments.
At first glance, it feels very old-school and nothing fancy but I was genuinely pleased by the kind staff and prompt service. I had their roast beef sandwich with the delicious blue cheese dressing along with a soup. They also had one of my favorite tea drinks so I figured this was the place to be at. Food overall was very good and comforting. Would love to come back to try their other French inspired selections
One of my favorite places in Evanston. I love the charming French atmosphere of the little shop and I literally have dreams about the icebox sugar cookies. You must always ask if they have them because they are rarely on display. All the sandwiches are delightful, for us the brie on baguette is the way to go. If you are lucky they will wrap your sandwich in paper and string. It's the sweetest thing and reminds me of visiting my grandparents house. There is a calming energy to the place so slow down and enjoy your time there as they prepare your food. It's nice to visit a family place, with the brothers in their aprons (sons of Al). The vintage candies on display are fun too. It's a hidden little gem near the Noyes St "L" stop. Don't miss it.
