This place is a must stop for those exploring Elgin. In good weather the dining is expanded outside where you'll take in the downtown area. The service is wonderful, the food is excellent, and the malts are amazing. Al's Cafe is a historic landmark for the Elgin area, you'll get a lesson in this while observing the interior decor.

One of my favorite places to eat. The entire restaurant feels unique. The menu feels crafted, rather than filled with standard foods. They also have frequent specialty menus that never disappoint.

My personal favorite is the goat cheese arriabata. Their side salads and soups are always good. They also are home to my favorite milkshake (their hot fudge milkshake). I always feel the need to stop here whenever I am in Elgin or the surrounding area.

I recommend you sit upstairs it has a nice view of downtown Elgin. Service was friendly and quick. Gave us a dinner menu at 12:30pm but the waitress brought out lunch menu quickly when asked. Great little spot and quality food.

A hidden treasure. Old fashion soda made with phosphates. If you never tried one go to Al's what a treat. Love the 19th Century building and decor. The flavors the Chef prepares the food is fresh and right out of a 5 Star restaurant. Don't sleep on great find!

Been going here for years. Wonderful old building from the turn of the century - 20th not 21st - and I love the atmosphere. The staff is very friendly and do a great job. The food is quite delicious with quite a selection. They also have seasonal specials. But what they are very well-known for is their milk shakes and malts. The reputation is without a doubt well, well deserved. They are thick and luscious and come in a variety of flavors. You cannot go there without having one and I've made visits simply to have one. Go - you will not be disappointed.
