The place has a very cool old-timey feel to it, but nowhere does it say it's closed in January. So we went there on the way home from Michigan, and it felt like we were driving straight into hell. Overall, a cool place, but very creepy in the middle of the winter.
Food is great. They struggle when it's super busy.
The pros: charm, character, and the ice cream!
The cons: prices are a bit expensive (but there's no other places around), if you want a lot of healthy choices for food-it's very limited (they just added pb&j's for kids though).
It's the only choice for food at Hesston Steam Museum and it is decent food and portions. Lunch doesn't start until 11:30am.
All the furniture and equipment in Doc's was rescued and preserved from the old Schlipp's Pharmacy soda fountain. Authentic art deco design. The ice cream and soda phosphates are to die for! The food is also delicious--Not the stereotypical cheap "hot dogs and chicken nuggets" selection. During the holidays, additional seasonal themed treats are available.
Like an old fashioned soda fountain. Charming.
