Taste Place

Took our family of 4. We ordered off of the American Chinese menu mainly. Not your average run-of-the-mill Americanized Chinese. I felt their menu, their flavors, and everything in between was spectacular. I can't say I've had these flavors anywhere else, and to say that's a compliment would be an understatement. My family also very much enjoyed their dishes. I certainly recommend checking them out. Yes, we miss Yang Chow Wok. But welcome to the neighborhood, Taste Place!

Best authentic Chinese food in the Iowa City area! I’m especially happy because this is the same restaurant I used to eat at when I lived in Ames. They unfortunately closed in Ames, but reopened here! Everyone we brought was satisfied with the dishes and we were all very happy about this new Chinese place in town.

Ordered:
-Hot and Sour soup: Great dish to start with. Had great umami flavor and was not too sour.
-Mu Xu pork: Pork, eggs, cucumbers, and Woodear mushroom in this dish. Delicious. The eggs had a beautiful silky texture.
-Yu-Shiang eggplant with garlic sauce: It was a fan favorite.
-Stewed fish in chili sauce: velvety fish that holds onto just the right flavors of the sauce. The spicy oils might be intimidating, but it actually wasn’t spicy.
-Fried Chicken with Cumin: Wasn’t too impressed by this dish, but it’s because we thought it would be deep fried chicken. This dish is great for someone that really likes cumin.
-Beef with Potatoes in Curry Sauce: Soft braised beef and perfectly cooked potatoes in a rich savory sauce.
-Hot and Spicy chicken (purchased on a different day): good flavors but the dish uses boneless chicken. Only slightly crunchy due to the sauce.
-Dry pot (purchased on a different day) great base to start with and you can add basically whatever you want in it! Price can add up quickly though.

Would I return?: Yes! We are definitely going to be regulars.

One of our favorite restaurants Yang Chow closed so we were excited to see another spot open up. We were not disappointed. The food and eat-in service was amazing. Prompt service, friendly and attentive staff, delicious food, good portion size. We were very happy with our meal. We had Chili wontons for an app, amazing and a definite recommend. The crab Rangoons were delicious and they have a good blend in their recipe. The sweet and sour chicken and chicken fried rice meals for our main course didn't disappoint either. Will definitely be going back

Great service, authentic food, cozy atmosphere, and fair price. Highly recommend the hot pot lamb and chili oil fish. Over all, we are very satisfied with the restaurant.
