The food was pretty food, but very light on the seasoning. Had to bring out salt, pepper, and hot sauce to get rid of the bland taste on mash potatoes. Also their sides are ridiculously small for the price! The greens were tasty and the peach cobbler was just cooked peach soup.
Choice of fish or chicken. I tried both. The fish was prepared fresh, crunchy not greasy. I tried both the rotisserie and fried chicken. The rotisserie was a tad dry. The fried chicken was juicy, not at all greasy. The baked mac n cheese reminded me of homemade. The greens were tasty. Gravy with mashed potatoes, yummy. Loved the fried okra, which was also prepared fresh! I did not try any of the desserts, but will on my next visit. Staff was friendly and helpful. Except for the rotisserie chicken would have given 5 stars.
I always love going to this place. I wish I went more, but it's a treat to me. Being from the south, I get excited before I even walk in the door. I know the chicken is going to be amazing, the fish is going to be stellar and that fried okra. Damn. The family is always pleased when I bring home their family portions.
The food is always hot and fresh. It is southern cooking home style. The staff are fantastic and very friendly. The portions are generous. If you haven't eaten there you have done yourself a great injustice. You don't have to take my word for it , just ask around I think anyone who has been there will say the same.
*Long sigh* I was really craving soul food that I didn't have to cook and I found this restaurant while we were visiting Iowa City. The restaurant is beautiful, the owner is a Georgia peach, but the food is only 3 stars????.
I wanted to give 5 stars but the food did not have that soul food kick! I had the fish and chicken combo with Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens (delicious), cornbread ( delicious but too small) and Spaghetti; just like another poster said, the food tastes like it's seasoned for diabetics and I agree. The fish was fried too hard which made it thin and crumbly, the peach cobbler tasted good but it was too watery and had a dumpling texture.
I fell in love with the Fin and Beak sauce, so I bought a bottle. The prices are reasonable but the portions could be bigger. If I'm in the area again, I might return but I'll have to add my own seasoning.
