Fabulous place for lunch in Czech Village featuring old country recipes such as goulash with superb dumplings but also great smoked fish and meats by the pound and dark rye bread. Owner’s years in New Orleans very evident here as well. All in a low key and comfortable setting and very reasonable prices. Two visits and would return tomorrow!
Love this place. Great food and an excellent addition to Czech Village.
We really enjoyed our experience at Village Meat Market & Cafe. The food was great and reasonably priced. I loved the schnitzel which came with potatoes and candied red cabbage. We like the candied red cabbage so much, we bought more to take home. And their rye bread, which is home made and has a ton of stuff in it, was so good we bought 2 loaves to take home also. And the staff was just amazing. Service was friendly and fast. Would definitely recommend it as a must stop!
Literally went in to use the ATM, so glad I did, glanced at the menu... A wonderfully richly flavored secret family recipe Czech goulash and perfectly prepared beignets were my surprise delight. Family style seating, live rhythm and blues, a treat. Update: went back for the schnitzel... Red cabbage, warm potato salad, dark bread... Perfect... And of course, another order of beignets... Will be back next time I'm in Cedar Rapids.
This is an outstanding casual lunch spot in Cedar Rapids. When our families visit from NC and TN, we bring them here for good, flavorful comfort food!
The menu is fairly small, which I always consider a good thing because it usually means a restaurant does a few dishes exceptionally well, and that is indeed the case with the Village Meat Market & Cafe. Because the people in my group all order different dishes, I have sampled almost everything on the menu and nothing has been disappointing. We all clean our plates! (That said, the Village Schnitzel is my personal favorite.)
I recommend ordering 1/4 or 1/2 lb of the smoked salmon with dill sauce as an appetizer for the table before your meal arrives. My dad bought nearly 2 lbs of it to put on ice and take back to TN - it's that good, and reasonably priced.
I never leave without taking home some of the sausages or smoked/deli meats from the meat case, and the dark bread loaves are to die for and great for toast the next day.
