Just a short walk from the Hilton Garden Inn this gem surprised me in a great way.
I asked the server what they are know for. Farm to table. The she showed me on the back of the menu the names and locations of where their foods are sourced. All nearby…which is what the name First Mile Kitchen implies.
She suggested two dishes. One was the salmon salad and I teased about sourcing salmon locally. The second was the brisket burrito. Locally sourced food tipped my choice-scale and I chose the burrito. I ordered a scone as well.
The burrito came with an amazing sauce topped with fried Kale. The kale was crispy and tasty. But the sauce was one of those sauces you could put on cardboard and happily eat. But don’t. More about the sauce. Often times I notice heat can overwhelm a pepper based sauce…but this was all flavor and just a bit of heat. Wow.
The burrito was the perfect proportion of brisket, cheese and beans. Then topped off with a perfectly cooked fried egg. I’d order it again in a heartbeat.
The scone was good and I would guess had been made with cornmeal. So if you like cornbread, you’d love the scone. It was savory with cheese and jalapeño.
Eat here. Support local restaurants and local farmers…and eat amazingly great food while doing it. Win-win-win.
This is our second time at First Mile. We were seated immediately with a reservation. Food was delicious both times. This time we were pleasantly surprised they had gluten free bread. My teenager had the grilled cheese with gluten free bread and she loved it. My grain bowl was fresh and tasty. Highly recommend!
First Mile exceeded our expectations! All four at our table loved what we ordered, and that is highly unusual. Highlights: The malt pancakes with tequila sunrise syrup that we shared as an appetizer could become addictive. The thick cut bacon had a light, crunchy texture and was not at all chewy like thick bacon often is. The mimosas were made with pomegranate juice and were delicious. Inviting atmosphere and friendly attentive staff (Next time I will remember our server's name. She was wonderful.) This will be a repeat restaurant for us for sure!
Wow! Where do I begin? I absolutely love how this restaurant is serving our community by sourcing food from our local Kansas farms! Even the furniture was crafted by local artisans- who knew? I have now dined there 3 or 4 times with different friends for lunch and all of us have been very happy with our meals, the service, and the drinks! I plan to go for dinner soon as many of my friends have said the dinner menu is extra good. A side note- First Mile Kitchen is “fine dining” but doesn’t have that “stuffy” feeling! Love the fact they spin LPs as you dine!
I have had dinner and many lunches and it’s always an amazing experience!! Food. Atmosphere. Service. All of it.
Pictured are the “You’re So Grain Bowl” and pistachio rose blossom danish I enjoyed for lunch. Both were to die for!! I also had a yummy Iced White Chocolate Oat Milk Latte (suggested by the bartender) but didn’t snap a pic because it was too good to wait.
I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in town, and especially those traveling through to show off what Wichita has to offer.
