Gasthaus German Restaurant

I try to avoid giving higher than 4 stars unless a restaurant truly deserves it. With the Gasthaus, the 5-star rating comes easily.

The atmosphere is comfortable and intimate, service is friendly and efficient, the drink selection is full of winners, and the food is authentic with very satisfying portions. Instead of appetizers, they serve soft, crispy German bread with a kind of dreamy herb butter. Don't ask for more than one loaf, though, because you'll be tempted to make a meal of it!

The dessert menu has about 15 entries, and they rotate serving between 4-7 of them during any given week. If your first choice of dessert isn't available that night, just ask for whatever's freshest; they have no bad desserts.

As a final note, keep in mind that the adjacent liquor store is their primary supplier. If you try a beer or wine so tasty that it needs to be part of your life, you can probably find it next door.

The food is great. People are nice. Made takeout order for sick wife before they were supposed to be open...it was very nice of them. Always enjoy it there.

Extraordinary! I make it a habit of visiting Authentic German Restaurants when traveling. This week while in Louisville I stumbled across this gem of a restaurant. Authentic atmosphere, food and excellent service. The banner outside proclaimed 25 years of business. I have no doubt that they will make another 25 if they keep the high standards we experienced tonight. We were a five person party and everyone was impressed.

Great food and great staff. Prices are not $ but worth it. Make sure to make reservations and check out the home made desserts. I highly recommended the red cabbage!

The staff is very pleasant and fun. The food is fresh and absolutely delicious. I've been here a few times in the last 10 years and have never been disappointed. A very authentic German restaurant. Hope to be coming back more often in the next 10 years.
