My wife is british, and I've spent a number of years living in the uk. It is very difficult to find actual British food in America. This is perhaps the first actual British restaurant / bakery / butcher that I have found in the US, and I've looked in the Los Angeles area, Chicago, and Washington dc. The fact that it is in brighton, my hometown, in a building that my family used to own, makes it all the more surprising. Putting aside the location, the food was very good.
If you're familiar with British foods, like sausage rolls or Cornish pasties, I suspect you'll find that the food is on par with the best you could expect to find at any British bakery or butcher in the UK. My sausage roll had a perfect pastry crust, and the sausage was well seasoned with a robust herb flavor and hint of spice that hits different from any US sausages. I look forward to frying up the rashers and sausages in a breakfast this week. (Update: bacon/rashers were fantastic!)
For those that aren't very familiar with British foods, I recommend giving it a shot. Mike takes a lot of pride in his food. I would also recommend trying British bacon. It tastes like bacon, but you get as much meat as you would with a slice of ham. If you've ever liked bacon but felt like there wasn't very much substance to it, this is what you've been looking for your whole life. And it is near impossible to find in the US, especially cured on site!
I ordered an old menu item today and Chef Mike kindly made me it for me anyways. I greatly enjoyed the Brit poutine and I look forward to tasting the Chicken Korma Curry next time!
So good! And very large portions, plenty for 2 people
Huge portions make the higher price tag well worth it. Food was great and Chef Mike was super nice. Everything tasted homemade. Welcome to Brighton, Chef Mike!
