Good food and good vibe. An institution with reasonable prices and satisfying portion sizes. This is not white table cloth dining but down-to-earth good food. Definitely not for those who think that they can talk down to people because they are providing you a service. If you are that kind of person, try going elsewhere.
I love Hard Times Cafe and all of the people who work here. I’ve been a customer for years and it is hands down the best cafe I’ve ever been to for many different reasons. I’ve eaten here when I need a cheap, filling meal. I’ve probably spent literal days in the back high top tables drinking coffee and reading.
Not only do they have incredible, affordable, flavorful vegan/vegetarian food and the best and biggest muffins in the city, this is a place where I can FEEL SAFE. We need more spaces like this in Minneapolis, and in the world in general. Solidarity always.
Our favorite cafe! Such great food and service. We love the collective ownership and especially love how welcoming the atmosphere is. All vegetarian menu, pay cash at the counter. Cash (and trash) rule everything around me. Highly recommend!
I've been going to the Hard Times since 1998. That's a long time. Good gluten-free muffins; the migas are usually good too and have long been my go-to order. Basically I always get breakfast food. I like the spiced coffee too -- strong. It's worth noting they offended a political group on 10/16 and now you've got people from Florida and Delano, MN, posting one-star reviews about how terrible the servers are. These people have never been there. There are no servers, my friends. You write your order on a piece of paper at the counter, pick up your food when they call your name, and bus your own dishes. The music is great. The bathroom is indeed a bit of a horror show sometimes, primarily because it's not well-ventilated. Bring cash. Eat a cardamom cookie if they've got one. Relax.
HARD TIMES IS THE BEST CAFE I HAVE EVER BEEN TOO IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I feel at home when i am there. Their food is delicious, and service is always speedy. The friendly staff is always welcoming. What a treat. best place in Minneapolis hands down.
