Had a very good experience at Chef J’s. Love the laid-back vibe and a great excuse to explore the bottoms (ahem, I’m talking about the neighborhood 😁). Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Portions are very generous too. I thought the brisket wasn’t as good as some other KC institutions - it was tender, but lacked the smoky/salty punch. The pulled pork was great and the sides are off the hook — highly recommend the Mexican corn! The desserts are delicious too — the peanut butter pie was the perfect end to our meal. Recommend!
Pros:
Bacon burnt ends. These are FANTASTIC!
Pork Ribs. Fall off the bone tender. Excellent.
Hot link / sausage. Really good flavor.
Mac & cheese. Loved the bow tie noodles.
Sauces. Enjoyed the BBQ sauces.
Deserts. Amazing
Atmosphere. I like the building it’s in.
Cons:
Beef brisket. DRY. No moisture. Probably the worst beef brisket I’ve ever had.
Beans. They’re much to plain. The sauce the beans come in is good but the beans themselves could have been softer. What I discovered is when I added pieces of rib & sausage to the beans and it all mixed with the sauce, it was MUCH better. The beans would be better if they added more to the mix. It’s bland by themselves.
Bottom line: When the food here hits, it’s really good. The misses were really bad. For Kansas City BBQ it’s not bad so I’d recommend you stop in.
Definitely worth the hour wait! We got there at 11 am, he opened at noon and was sold out by 1230!! The brisket was flavorful and didn’t need any BBQ sauce and the ribs were spot on. Absolutely loved the cheesy smoked elotes and the Mac and cheese. If you’re ever in the Kansas City area I highly recommend checking out this place, you won’t be disappointed!
I was at Stockyard BBQ store, which is across the street from Chef J's and found this place on accident. I'm ALWAYS looking to find the BEST BBQ in KC, and today is that day. When you think of BBQ, you don't really think Italian Sausage, well that's about to change. Chef J's sausage isn't just the best in KC, it's one of the best I ever had, and the spare ribs, forgetta bout it, meat fell right off the bone. Both sides were out of this world. Two meat combo, no drink, came to about $25. Service was good, atmosphere was really cool, plenty of parking, and the BBQ is thee best.....The only reason I give this place a four instead of a five is the restroom, the restroom really needs a thorough cleaning. Other than that, definitely check this place out.
Consistently the best BBQ in Kansas City. Brisket is cut to order, thick sliced, and is both juicy and fall-apart tender. Bacon burnt ends are out of this world…so good that they limit the quantity unless you order ahead. Mac and cheese is smooth and creamy, better than your mom’s or grandma’s best recipe. The banana pudding and peanut butter pie are both a perfect finish. My only suggestion is to bring Diet Dr Pepper into the fountain machine! Most BBQ places have off days where the meat just isn’t all that great … have *never* experienced that at Chef J!
