Quality wursts, indeed.
This new and welcome addition to Dekalb Market Hall is an outpost of the sausage-slanging spot that arose out of a butcher shop on the UES. And I like it.
Much like the original, they are offering up an array of sausage combinations that reflect the diversity of this fine city (Kim Chi Chen, Po'Brat, Saigon Special, etc.), but the true strength is in their truly excellent wursts.
I recently rocked a Schaller Double (bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, Stube sauce all atop a cheddar brat), and that is a seriously tasty cheddar brat. It may squirt on the guy sitting next to you, but if he has his back turned you don't have to tell him.*
To be sure, everything wasn't perfect. It's overloaded for the size of the bun and thus impossible to eat without making a gigantic mess (but that's my fault, I ordered it fully knowing how many ingredients there were), and there was no bacon despite the menu's promises (that part I take personally).
But it didn't matter. I loved every second of eating this high quality sausage because it is as good as sausage gets. I believe these German butchers have been doing this for nearly 80 years. You don't stay in business that long in NYC unless you've got it down.
From the looks of what was happening around me, I think the wurst plate is a good move. Two sausages, kraut, and a giant pretzel (that looked incredible)? I'm sold.
I'll probably work my way through most of this menu over the next few months either way, but they better have my bacon on it next time.

*This may seem rude, but I'm pretty sure it's a rule here at Schaller's Stube.
Delicious food and friendly, quick service. I had the classic bratwurst and it and the mustard were delicious. Had the latkes and French fries as well. Former also very good, the latter just average but good enough.
