My third lunch at Childress. The food is wonderful and the wait staff EXCEPTIONAL. We go here largely because of Blake, who knows the menu inside and out. The Riesling is phenomenal and we love the gift shop! The Shrimp and Four Cheese Ravioli is in contention for the best meal of my life: treat yourself with a trip to Childress. And ask for Blake!
This place is lovely. The buildings are beautiful, the grounds breathtaking. The gift shop inside is a cute little gift shop with knickknacks having to do with wine. There are also some local vendor things there which is also nice to see. There is a restaurant inside, which does take reservations but they are not required. The restaurant looks out over the grounds and serves good food. There is a wonderful winery tour which shows you various areas of the winery as well as explains the process. Very nice place to visit during all seasons.
We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the wines (barrel select tasting) and bought more than we intended. This was partly because the owner, Richard Childress, had been in earlier and opened a bottle of his favorite. We got a sneak taste since the bottle was open... Oh, wait, was I not supposed to tell? It's my favorite wine now, too, although it's priced fairly high above our normal budget. We bought some anyway, since our 40th anniversary is coming up. We also took the informative and fun tour. All the staff were knowledgeable and friendly. We'll be back!
Wow! What a wonderful place. It was absolutely beautiful. They really care about the wine making it is very good. Richard Childress has created a fabulous place to visit. If you have time take the tour, it is worth it. You also hear how Childress helps the community and shows up to his winery often. It is a relaxing place. My husband and I enjoy visiting wineries! This one has made the top of our list.
