Grumpy Monk in Monroe is now one of my favorite eating establishments. They had some rough patches with service when they opened, but those have smoothed out. The food is excellent and the service is usually very quick.
This is our favorite place for salad in the area. They're always fresh and they are HUGE - easily 2-3 times bigger than a dinner salad at most any other restaurant I've tried. The burgers are good, the wings are great. The french dip is one of my favorite sandwiches anywhere. Their homemade chips are wonderful - everything I've eaten there recently has been excellent. We try to make it in once a week if we can.
Update: service and food have improved - review updated
It was all right, but not great.
Had fried green tomatoes and a black bean burger.
Tomatoes were not done in the traditional southern style, they were cut thick and cooked with breading instead of flour or corn meal. As a result they are undercooked, hard and not sweet. I do not recommend them.
The black bean burger was good, but not great. It was sort of bland...
There are lots of TVs in here, and they are loud. If you're into the sports bar aesthetic then perhaps you'll like this place, but for me it was too much.
I'll give it another shot, but I'm not rushing back...
We went for lunch and enjoyed our visit very much. Roberta gets a shout out as our server who was very attentive, personable, and genuinely happy. Food is delicious. No problems making my Reuben into a wrap. Hubby said his burger was one of the better burgers he's had. Great craft beer selections. I think I counted 40 taps. Atmosphere is a rustic, urban, sports pub without the overly sports feel. You will be able to see the game from any seat in the house. The kitchen is open concept, which allows you to see what is going on back there. Grumpy Monk also gets this girls clean star of approval.
Wonderful spot for food and drinks. I’m not a beer drinker but they have some killer ciders I’ve never tried but instantly loved. The food, every-time my husband and I have been here, has been incredible. Service was quick, friendly, & attentive. This place has quickly became a favorite. Must try the Na-Na-Nachos & Grand Mimosa Cider for my non-beer drinking friends.
