Okay, so I always forget to take pictures of my food—but I was referred to Proper by a friend, and it did not disappoint! Waitstaff was knowledgeable and friendly, and the food was exceptional. We went here twice during our few days in Boone. The food is all homemade, and the quality is amazing. Have you ever had a butter biscuit that was CRISPY on the outside, and didn’t crumble to bits?? You will here. Macaroni and cheese lover?? My man took one bite of the creamy, cheese-drenched shell noodles and said, “I think my mouth just climaxed.”
The only thing I’d not recommend is the rice and gravy—nothing over which to write home. But the collards, pintos, homemade beats, Mac and cheese...so good. Catfish lightly breaded and generous portion.
Try it. We’ll be back.

My favorite restaurant in Boone. Proper Southern cooking at extremely reasonable prices. I’ve been to restaurants that are three times as expensive that couldn’t match Proper’s consistent quality of food and service. Brunch and dinner are both excellent.

Proper has some great, tasty, fresh food. Their mashed potatoes are at the right consistency. Their homemade ketchup tastes great as well as their hush puppies. Cozy inside and love the touch of mason jars as cups

All things amazing. I had beets, tomato pie, mac & cheese and cornbread. Even the unsweetened tea was great! Price is fantastic as well. Service was great!!!

Was referred to Proper by a local wine maker and let me just say.... The Best Referral Ever Received ! From the welcome greeting to the farewell, I was smiling and felt fulfilled. The location is an old prison and frat house which gives it plenty of character???? Olivia our server was pleasant and knew her menu very well. All of her recommendations were on point. Chef Angela knows what’s she’s doing in her kitchen. Her most prominent ingredient is LOVE. Wasn’t able to meet her but whenever I’m in Boone, I will have a meal here.
