*This review was written for the Vita Cafe. I haven’t been since it became Cafe Gertrude.*
The tempeh fried “steak” has been my favorite breakfast in Portland for over a decade. Lots of choices for all diets. Their vegan gravy is the best and I’m not even vegan. Comfort food even if you’re already comfortable.
FABULOUS! We had the crispy fried tofu sandwich, tempeh rueben, and the fried cauliflower. ALL of it was amazing! And the quickly message uuu back on Instagram if you have any questions regarding the food. Delicious vegan food!! I cannot recommend this place enough. Check the out on Instagram. Their pictures are totally accurate.
Cafe Gertrude had really good vegan food, i'd love to come back but I found a hair in my food the very first time I went and when we walked into the restaurant we were confused on how the seating/ordering worked and they just stared at us and didn't offer us any guidance on how the restaurant worked. In all, the experience was awkward and I found a hair in my food, but the food is great. If they had better service I would come back again.
Cafe Gertrude, formerly Vita Cafe, is under new management, we found the menu to be familiar and wonderful particularly for the great vegan dishes. Yet, before we mention the food we must say that the staff was warm, knowledgeable, and gracious.
My partner's sandwich, called In a Pickle, featured a toasted to perfection non-gluten bread with beyond meat sausage, sauerkraut, and an otherworldly pickle. I couldn't control myself from sneaking bites from her plate.
We shared a roasted cauliflower that is part savory and part sweet, and a treat of an appetizer. I loved it because we are on a sugar fast, and this felt like a free pass to indulge!!
My entree was the Vegan Nachos, and it is the best one I've ever had. Filling and flavor healthy, crunchy in all the right layered places, cheese, believe it or not, was not missed, because whatever the alternative was left us swooning.
Drinks were reasonably priced and well crafted. My Old Fashioned was perfect.
We certainly will go back, and the rest of Alberta Street has a lot to offer in the way of music and fun.
Used to be Vita's. Loved Vita's and was a bit sad it changed, but definitely was not disappointed. Mac and cheese was great as well as the fajitas. can't wait to go back and try the Ruben sandwich. Service awesome. Must try for vegan food...also has non vegan options if you prefer
