I used to work a roofing job when I was a young man. That was before I started my cybernetic re-tooling. I’ll never forget the feeling of the sun on your back and neck. The tingle and itch when your skin would blister and peel and you would feel the layers rubbing together making you itch like there were small bugs in your skin. I never once didn’t love that feeling.

Nowadays I don’t have much skin left. Nobody does really.

Most of my hardware is housed locally, and I recently downsized and started renting server space for my higher-processing needs and memory storage. I only keep a few “Bio-apps” around for reminiscing with friends. I kept my old fore-arm and hand (which costs a fortune to keep preserved and tuned) and of course a couple of genitals for when I get the urge to have some old-fashioned fun.

However, the one thing I never wanted to let go of was the feeling of the sun on my shoulders. Of that stinging burn that comes quickly but leaves slowly. I’ve kept the upper musculature and skin from my shoulders and neck; perfectly tuned with nerves set on high. A couple times a month I’ll hook up and set it in the sun. Tanning and then crisping in fine form. It never fails to make me forget all my troubles.

People used to laugh when I’d tell them. Everyone thought they were clever keeping genitals and eyeballs and ears when they switched away from analog, but I may very well be the only one who kept their shoulders and neck just so that they could get sunburn over and over.

Nowadays I’m nearly famous for my shoulders. I’ve had people offer tens of thousands of processing hours just to use my shoulders for a single day, but I’ve never taken them up on their offers. I think I’ll keep this small strange pleasure all to myself.
