Speaking as an Englishman that is accustomed to a larger and more varied selection of chocolates and candy, River Street Sweets was a delight to visit in comparison to the limited offerings available in the nearby grocery stores. From the glass counters full of carefully considered flavor pairings and creative combinations of chocolate, nuts, and other elements, it becomes immediately clear to see that the Savannah-based company approach confectionary with an artisanal touch.

Complementing the bear claws and nut brittles behind the counters, the walls are stacked to the ceiling with plastic bins containing a variety of candies designed for a pick-and-mix by the pound. The selection available at the pick-and-mix is sure to accommodate all sweet-teeth, featuring products ranging from the sour-coated, to the sugar-frosted, to the marshmallow-filled.

I had purchased a small selection of chocolate truffles for my wife, a sprinkled chocolate marshmallow stick for my stepson, a bear claw for myself, and some cookie-shaped brittles for later - though in allowing myself an early preview of taste, there can be no debating the quality of the candies available at River Street Sweets.

However, where the taste of the candies is undoubtedly moreish, the cost of the products is a little more uncomfortable to swallow. Set at a little over fifteen dollars a pound, the price doesn't seem unreasonable at first impression, yet the richness and density of the products means that customers will not receive the quantity that they might expect. Of course, when one remembers the two choices that we seem to be faced with in the United States, it might become easier to accept the per-pound price: purchasing cheap candy from a grocery store wherein both the selection and the branding seems not to have improved since the 1970s or pay a little more to receive a quality product from locations that are few and far between. Regardless of where customers stand on the debate between quantity and quality, parents visiting Barefoot Landing while on vacation from Myrtle Beach or the surrounding area should be wary of leading their children into the store after playing outside and being lured into an unexpected purchase.

I stopped in to see what sweets they had, and had observed that the ice cream is homemade. After seeing that, I just had to give them a try. So glad I did!!

I ordered a sugar cone, and just had to try a couple of their favorites, so I went with a scoop of banana pudding, as well as a scoop of the praline ice cream. Honestly, I just couldn't decide which one I liked the most. They were both delicious. The banana pudding had a perfect flavor, and the praline taste much better than I had expected.

Definitely worth a visit! They also had a wide selection of candies, fudge, pralines, and many things covered in chocolate

Good place to stop and grab a quick treat. I wasn’t overly impressed with the taffy selection they had available. They were giving free samples of the world famous pralines. We did pick up dark chocolate with almonds that was good. Jam packed full of almonds, so it was difficult to get a good idea of what the chocolate quality was. They had a good selection of sweets, hard candies and homemade ice cream and gelato. Reasonably priced for a tourist shopping center. Adorable decorations on some of the pastries to celebrate Saint Patrick’s day. Great looking candied Apples in all sorts, Caramel, candied, nuts, etc. fruit slices galore! World famous pralines, clusters, bark! There’s no shortage of sweets at this store.
