Big Ed's is home town pizza at its finest. The place has been a hangout for several generations of locals and it is filled with a ton of little idiosyncrasies like you'd imagine a hometown pizza joint would be. The decor, the funny bathroom placement, the tiny little menus, the jukebox, the simple white shirts of the staff - these are all memories baked into my life from my childhood on.
And of course the pizza is delicious. I have a theory that every hometown pizza joint is sacred to those who grew up with it but nothing special to outsiders. If you'll grant me that bias, then I can say without a doubt that Big Ed's is my favorite pizza anywhere. I've had pizza from Tuscon to Washington DC to Edinburgh to Paris and I haven't liked any of it like I do my hometown pizza joint.
The crust is crunchy, the cheese is stretchy, the sauce has a bite, and the atmosphere is homey like you wouldn't believe. Seriously, I've been in restaurants with names like "Mom's Restaurant" that weren't as homey as Big Ed's.
I enjoyed this dinner! You can see the kitchen through some windows. The atmosphere is very moody. It's outer appearance does not reflect what you find inside the doors. It's like walking into another world when you enter. It was rather noisy, but that's partially due to how popular this place is. We managed to find a seat just fine.
We customized a pizza, and we were not disappointed! In my opinion, they didn't add quite enough of the toppings we chose, but we were still very pleased with the pizza! It was also nice to see real bacon on a pizza. It looked like they cooked it up right before adding it to the pizza. Delicious!
Ate here for the first time today. Was a little disappointed that I didn't have any other choices besides pizza. Was hoping for pasta and/or subs. But the pizza was excellent. It didn't take long to get, waitress was super sweet. Great inviting atmosphere. Will go back
Visited for lunch and got five pizzas to go. Great ambiance, with trophies and flags and such; this business is clearly community-minded. But for all that, the service was not good (had to ask for water; then for straws). The pizza was perfectly average; nothing epic. I doubt if Big Ed's cheese pizza, taken home, would consistently win a taste-test against DiGiorno.
The food was great. It took a while to get it but there was a 30 min wait to get in and we had 13 people in our party. The kids really enjoyed watching the pizzas being made and probably more so because they thought one of the workers there was magical because she had purple or blue hair (my apologize to the women for not remembering which) and matching eye makeup. They thought she was a fairy. Great experience for all. The server was great and polite.
