There is so much to say about Nearest Green Distillery. I have visited my fair share of distilleries all over the country (and probably several other people's fair share too, if I'm being honest), and this one not only exceeds all of them in its presentation, but also in its heart and story. The location is a little under an hour from Nashville, but you'll feel like you were transported to another time. So much thought and intention went into curating the entire experience of being on the Nearest Green grounds. It stays true to the walking horse roots of the farm as well as cultivating a speakeasy type vibe in the Humble Baron, which is impressive with the sheer size of the bar.
If you're going to make the drive out, you can now visit and hang out at the BBQ joint or the world's longest bar (Humble Baron) - but you'd be cheating yourself if you missed out on the tour. Walking the grounds, seeing the artifacts, and hearing the tale of how the Nearest story was unearthed and brought back to be established as the legacy it deserves is an incredible experience. The two times I've taken the tour, I was lucky to get Xavier as a tour guide, who is not only engaging and conversational, but full of knowledge on the history of the area and the grounds themselves. You will definitely want to book your tour in advance, don't show up and expect to be able to hop on one last minute.
I won't say much more on the experience itself - you just need to get out there and let it speak for itself. We all owe a debt to Fawn Weaver for her vision and drive to make this happen. Tennessee and the world are better for the existence of this place and the whiskey they produce.
Rarely do I give a 5 star review, but Nearest Green Distillery takes the cake. This will be a major brand in the next 5 years, and I’m documenting that now. The history, story telling, and experience was unreal. Our tour guide Terrell was outstanding and really loved the company. Made US love the company. And the icing on the cake, which for most IS the cake, is how great the product is. The whiskey is phenomenal. I prefer the higher end product, so the single barrel and masters blend were my preferred, but overall each of the whiskeys were really great. Take some time to visit the longest bar in the world (literally, a title they have truly earned), and enjoy expertly crafted cocktails and food. Highly recommend visiting, and I will be returning in the future for sure.
Nearest Green Distillery was an amazing place to tour. The buildings, staff, the narrative about the history were perfectly on point and made for a wonderful and interesting experience in the best way. I was so happy to hear about the background involving the Temperance movement and the relationship to Women's Suffrage addressed, as well as the history of Nathan Nearest Green and his family and descendants (in summary, GREAT tour guides!). The whiskey was itself was simply outstanding. It's clear that the Master Distiller knows exactly what she is doing and has a deep, trained taste palate. The gift shop was deeply stocked with whiskey and merchandise. I also had lunch at the BBQ restaurant on site and it was wonderful as well!
Make the trip out to visit- it was so worth it. I'm a jazz musician and I'm lucky to see many fine venues though my line of work. Nearest Green Distillery is a special place and stands out for its soulful excellence. Well done.
This tour was well worth it. We had no idea the rich history that was only recently discovered regarding Uncle Nearest and his whiskey. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and fun to walk with. We heard about the four women that started the distillery just a few years ago. If you’re interested about learning how black folks and women have changed history this is the place to be! Thank you to everyone; my husband and I will be purchasing that 11 year when it comes out 10 years from now!
The best whiskey tour and tasting me and my husband have been to. It was a pleasure to spend our 2 year wedding anniversary just down the road from our home at this lovely distillery; soon to be home to the world's longest bar "The Humble Baron" set in the guiness book of world records. Little did we know there was history here set before the well known Jack Daniel distilled his own, and how their connection was.
