This is our second time here. Our first time, we had no clue what we were doing. The owner, the gentleman with the glasses, helped us out and was very serene about the whole thing. The fact he was so helpful and polite made the experience that much better. My wife and I are Hispanic so it’s a whole different world for us, but again he was very informative of the meaning of Shabu, the Japanese tradition, customs, and also was super chill about it all. When he left, he thanked us for Supporting Local Businesses. That stuck out to us, which is what made us come back again. We’ll definitely be coming again next week!

Eating at a Shabu Shabu Bar is an experience rather than just dining. Shabu Shabu is a hot pot dish from Japan. The words Shabu Shabu literally mean “swish swish”. This is because one swishes the meat in the hot pot to cook before consuming. Dining at a Shabu Shabu Bar: You first select a meat and a broth from the menu. While seated at the table there will be a built-in hot plate directly in front of you. On the hot plate will be placed a shallow pot with broth of your choice. Next, you will have a bowl of vegetables and noodles, two dipping bowls (Ponzu: a citrus based sauce with a tart and tang flavor or Goma, a sesame sauce) a bowl of rice, and a platter with thinly cut slices of the meat you ordered. Add the vegetables to the boiling broth in the pot first as the vegetables will take longer to cook. Next, use your chopsticks to dip a slice of meat into the broth and swish it around for a few seconds (5 or less). Pull the meat out, dip it in one of the sauces, then set it on the bowl of rice to cool. Consume the meat with some of the rice if desired. Repeat the process for the vegetables as they begin to soften. Near the end of the meal, the broth can be consumed with the spoon provided. This restaurant offers Styrofoam bowls for take home.
Tonkotsu Shabu Shabu bar is an excellent restaurant. The staff were incredibly friendly and quick to explain how Shabu Shabu works for those who are new to the experience. The restaurant is well decorated with a revitalized art deco color scheme of black, gold, and gray. The lamp shades, and gold fish art on the wall in the kitchen area provide a tasteful and elegant dining setting. The bathroom is acceptable and has a floor covered with pennies. There is an automated paper towel dispenser and trash can next to the door, so you don’t have to touch the door knob. The food is excellent. This is an all-around positive dining experience. I highly recommend coming here for a date night.
