Unique experience. Super Charming rooms. After the two bigger hotels in town either said they had no vacancies (parking lot didn't look full) or did not answer the phone at all, I tried the Grist Mill and we were very pleased. It's supposed to be a Bed & breakfast, but due to staffing issues, it's pretty much just "Bed" now. Breakfast was not great, but the price reflects that. I hope they are able to get back to full service soon. Would still recommend it and hope we get the chance to stay there again.
The place is charming. Nice idea. The place is like a walk through the past and better than a museum. The owner is nice and accommodating.
On the negative, we got there late and there was no key for our room. We texted and called and eventually got the apologetic owner. We got in our room after waiting 30 min. We couldn’t bring ourselves to use the shower because the previous occupants and management had left a lot of hair in the shower.
Staying at Great Mill itself was an experience. It gives a feeling of going back in time. We stayed for couple of nights at a room at the top level with a bathroom attached.
Overall, it was nice stay and we'd like to stay again if we are around.
Things we liked,
+ Room and bathroom were very clean,
+ Loved the decor,
+ They seemed to be very nice people.
Reasons for taking out the one star are:
- The Clawfoot bathtub is a nice touch aesthetically but can become a trip hazard for someone not very careful
- The carpet on the stairs is really worn-out
Things we didn't mind but found to be good to keep in mind for others while staying at this place:
- With one window AC, the room can get pretty hot and the sound of running AC can be annoying at night
- It's self check in - so no one will be there to greet you rather you'll get your keys clipped to a board along with the room directions printed on a paper.
Booked last minute and luckily got top floor room as floors and stairs were very squeaky. Common areas smelled musty. Room was nice with a comfortable bed. However high sided claw foot tub was 10” off floor and very difficult to get in and out of. Never saw a hotel employee. I would not personally ever chose to stay here again.
