I am a NY pizza snob so finding decent pizza in VA is a real pain. I was on a trip and tried Frank's. I got a stromboli and first off a small stromboli is HUGE. For $8 the value was excellent and would feed 2 normal people. The large must be stupid big. Prices are very good for hand made food.
The sauce is bland, not that it should have a lot of flavor but it tasted a bit overcooked. Cheese, pepperoni, green peppers were all fresh and very tasty. I asked for light onion and they put long strips of yellow onion in. Made them difficult to eat but added decent flavor. Not picking faults, the food is good and exceptional for the area but I compare all of it to NY. If I lived out here I'd eat there a lot (while trying to get small things "corrected:")
All in all, if you are craving NY pizza or italian food this will 60%-65% hit the spot.
BTW a 100% rating will almost never happen outside of NY/NJ. Best I have found in VA is 90% (Valentino's Alexandria VA and he owned stores in Astoria Queens so he knows pizza) For VA anything in the 60%+ range is good in a pinch, not worth a long drive or high prices but acceptable as it is.
not so good
