The owner was great. He sang to a birthday guest and really worked the crowd. The issue I had was with the kitchen. The wait was ridiculously long. We watched a large table be served 1 plate at a time. One gentleman never received his food. An order was duplicated for my table rather than a correct dish coming out. It was apparent the wait staff were frustrated by the discourse in the kitchen. At the end if it all, I don't know that the food was worth that wait. Half our meal was comped but by that point the bill was low on the list of issues.

Great place to eat at. Excellent tasting soul food. You may want more of the food cause it's so good. They also give you enough food. you may need to take some home too cause the food is also filling. Succulent backed macaroni and cheese is my favorite food from this great home cookin restaurant. And please try their uptown cold drink. It's also luscious and non-alcoholic. I believe that it is a mixture of some kind of lemonade and iced tea. The employees are very nice and polite.

Visiting Va. for daughter's birthday weekend. We love to find local places to eat, not chains. Southern soul is what I requested from google and was very pleased with the offerings. I'm a fair reviewer...didn't use restrooms due to reaction from others in my group. The restaurant was a little dated, but that's what I liked most, the culture, the closeness of everything. There was a fully stocked bar which we loved. It was a community restaurant, folks were stopping in just to say Hi to the owner. I loved that. I had a direct view into part of the kitchen. I saw one guy cleaning walls and equipment the entire time while others prepared food. I'm a food safety manager and I loved seeing that!! It took a while for our food, but I didn't mind for some reason. I was just enjoying the music and people watching. Our food came piping hot. Huge chicken wings and they were delicious. My collards and mac and cheese were delicious also. Others in my group had fried shrimp which they raved about. Sadly, the ribs left much to be desired. With the soul food offerings at this place, I was hoping for country style ribs that had been cooked down in the owners signature sauce. Instead, I got some boil ribs with bottle sauce poured on top. I'm a rib fanatic, I was kinda sad with this entree. The deserts were from a local bakery. The chocolate cake was gross. They also had lemon, but for $4 a slice I expected more from the chocolate cake. After exiting the building, A guy was selling SWEET JESUS POTATO PIE in the parking lot. It was DELICIOUS! The restaurant should buy pies from him. I WILL GO AGAIN...I need to try the fish and pig's feet????!
