Crab Shack on the James

Good location. Excellent service. The flounder we ordered was a large portion. It was dry and unseasoned. Did not live up to the meals that we eaten there previously. Nice stroll on the fishing pier after the meal.

This was a great little spot to eat. The atmosphere is very laid back, but well cared for. The views of the James River are fantastic, and when you're done with your meal you can either go hang out on the beach, or walk up the fishing pier that is attached to the restaurant. I loved eating here. I even bought t-shirts.

I've been coming here for years and have never been disappointed with the food or the service, always wonderful. Since we moved to North Carolina I haven't been able to get my husband there to try the place, though I talk it up frequently. We were finally in Newport News to visit friends and had a chance to stop in during the middle of a Saturday afternoon. It has been at least 10 years since I've eaten then and I was worried that the build-up I gave to my husband would be unjustified. No worries, it was great.

We had the oysters Rockefeller and crab stuffed mushrooms for appetizers and we each had the crab cake dinner. We were seated promptly, our server was courteous and attentive and our food was served promptly, fresh and hot. Yes, it was a bit on the expensive side but then too, really good seafood usually is. My husband said it was one of the best meals he has had in a long time, for me it was simply on par with every other time I have been there. We will happily return we we get the opportunity.

Fun atmosphere with view of the James River either eating inside or out on the screen porch. Food is delicious and not only seafood but various items on menu to choose from. Always had good service and pleasant experience....Highly Recommend!!

Eating at this restaurant was delicious. We sat outside and had a wonderful view while eating a dozen crabs. My kids had kid's meals that were pretty large. We could have split just 1 between them. I highly recommend this place!
