Pretty good food - meat heavy, but the veggie entree was pretty tasty (corn cake and mushrooms and leeks). The beer and cocktail selection is expansive, so that's the draw. It's quite loud in there so be prepared for noise. Service was pretty quick and super friendly. Recommend!
We stopped here on our vacation, just to grab a quick lunch while making some other stops around the area - legit the best burger I’ve ever had. It was cooked perfectly to order, all the toppings complemented each other perfectly. We ordered a flight of the house brewed beers, as well as some of the guest beers. Our server Lauren was super helpful and pleasant; excellent service. If we didn’t live a few states away we would be regulars here.
I had heard about this popular restaurant, but never realized what I was missing! The food is extremely fresh, full of robust flavor, and beautifully presented! You will not be disappointed! I was also impressed by the friendly, knowledgeable staff and the inviting atmosphere, I definitely will go back! Great vibes! 5 stars all the way!
Restaurant with a large bar area and an outside covered patio (enclosed on three sides and open to the street, has a big screen TV in patio area). Relaxed, comfortable, and welcoming atmosphere. Any attire is appropriate, dress up or dress down, wear what you want. The food is amazing! They hand-make everything from scratch in their kitchen, right down to the tasty crackers! We went there twice. For appetizers we tried: the ham board (overflowing with 2 types of ham, 3 biscuits, pickled onions, pickled tomatoes, pickles, giant crackers, bacon jam, and pimento cheese - all tasted great), meatballs (2 medium meatballs on a plate of cheesy risotto, really delicious and filling), fried oysters (perfection but on the spicy side). I also had the duck, which was amazing! Great selection of craft beer, Virginia wine, some ciders. Their cocktail menu is awesome! They don't go overboard with the bitters like some places do, and they use fresh cut herbs/spices to add to the perfect flavor of each drink. The people there are friendly, quick, and helpful. 10 out of 10, will go back, and strongly recommend!
I had a couple of issues, but, don't let that dissuade you, this is a great restaurant!
I found the Amber Ox to be a wonderful restaurant on these points:
Amazing service, inventive menu, fresh tasty ingredients, and very comfortable ambiance.
My disappointment was just in two areas and because everything else I saw our group order was amazing and they loved it, I felt they still deserved four stars.
My disappointment was in the following:
I had the non-alcoholic drink - I believe it was supposed to be strawberry flavored but I barely tasted anything that tasted like strawberry. I should have guessed that that would be the case as the color of the drink was barely pink at the bottom.
Secondly, I ordered the grilled peach salad with chicken, which I very much looked forward to, but was a disappointment. I was hoping for grilled peaches that were slices instead they were tiny cubes and not that many of them. Then the chicken I added was minimal and rather hard to find throughout the salad. And lastly, there was a yogurt base at the bottom of the bowl which I personally don't feel added anything positive to the overall dish.
Once again, I would definitely give this restaurant a try as I saw other dishes and heard from the rest of my group that they liked what they had.
Definitely try their pimento cheese on crackers that was the highlight of my meal!
