COMMUNION Restaurant & Bar

Have been here twice about three months apart - our waiter was the same, hostess the same, the staff seemed largely the same. The experience was wildly different...

First time (Mar 2022) everything about the experience was fantastic. Great service, excellent food all around, easily one of the best meals in Seattle. Restaurant felt well run, well managed, great experience.

Second time (Jul 2022) was just disappointing. Service was typical Seattle surly, everything took forever, the entire restaurant felt really disorganized. Pork chop went from succulent to just "ok." Catfish and grits was amazing though. The other items (salmon croquette, hush puppies) just felt ordinary.

This restaurant has received many awards. There is clearly something special here...sometimes. Perhaps the second visit is an aberration, perhaps its the new normal, that much is not clear. My concern is if Communion can sustain the wonderful experience it is clearly capable of, or if it will fall victim to its own popularity and continue to slip downhill.

After so many months of trying, I finally got an opportunity to try this spot, and let me tell you It was worth the wait! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. The vibe was chill. The drinks were strong and all the food had just the right amount of spice. We had the Hood Sushi, Garlic Chicken, Grilled Okra, Fried Chicken Wings, Mac n Cheese, Fried cabbage and Jambalaya. Yeah it was a lot but we brought plenty home along with a Banana pudding to go. I was also very impressed with the diversity of patrons. The hostess introduced herself and gave a brief history of the restaurant. I assured her I would do a review. Overall, our visit was more like an experience. I will be visiting this establishment again very soon....Asia was our waitress😃

Really liked the food here. The fried chicken was amazing (so juicy! so tasty with the hot sauce!) and the banana pudding was to die for. Like it was so good.

Other reviews said the catfish grits was great but I thought it was just fine. The grits were watery and the catfish was pretty good but nothing to write home about. The Mac and cheese was great (it had a kick which was really cool) and I also thought the cornbread was really solid, worth getting. Grilled okra was good but a little salty.

Overall the fried chicken and banana pudding made the meal worth it and the cornbread and the mac and cheese were both really good too. Was a bit disappointed by the catfish and okra based on other reviews but they were fine. I'd definitely come again!

Oh also we came at 5:40 for the walk up and got a table in 15-20 mins, I think because of a reservation cancellation. They said it could take an hour and a half without any cancellations which I didn't understand because there was only one other party ahead of us and there was a bar that would open up. Anyway the walk up was fine but you may have to get lucky waiting on someone to cancel, which seems pretty frequent since people just nab reservations way ahead of time here.

Hard to get into as far as getting reservations but well worth the wait. The space is clean and well laid out. It's not a particularly large space but it didn't feel clustered. Staff was friendly and very informative. They answered my questions satisfactorily and helped me make a great choice for my meal based on my likes. Service was reasonably fast. There's a great selection to choose from and everything served to our party was absolutely delicious. Will definitely be visiting again soon

Best meal I have had in a while. We started with the deviled eggs and goodness the bacon jam deviled egg is out of this world. Roasted okra is amazing one of those dishes you will think about. Husband said the Mac and cheese was best he has ever had. Pork chop cooked to perfection.

Music is great, customers are happy, our server was the best.

Going back to get the hood sushi, try the greens and saving room for dessert!
