Casual, laid back, friendly atmosphere. Service was quicker than expected during lunch hour and convention traffic. This is a great place to go if you like highly seasoned chicken. You actually get to choose your flavor. I give one star less because the chicken was greasy - well prepared, but greasy. Could have drained a bit more before placing on a piece of bread to soak up the extra oil. Interesting touch with the added pickle. Simple, but it actually complimented the meal. Also, they offered a creative menu of pound cake slices (kiwi, strawberry lemonade, etc.).
Eugene’s is incredible. Best spicy chicken I’ve had. I like some of the other similar places as well but this place is my favorite. I eat at the food trucks when I see them but just recently tried out the actual place for the first time. Will be back.
Had never been here before, and it was a fantastic surprise! Very limited seating inside and out but we lucked out during The Game. The food was, absolutely delicious--great batter perfectly fried and to your requested heat level. Really fresh po' boy bread and the fried pickled okra was great. Parking may be an issue until roadwork construction is done, but this place is most definitely worth it!
The food was amazing and the staff was friendly and very helpful, we had a large party after attending an event at the Alabama Theater. The chicken is fresh, crispy, flavorful and HOT!!!! The sides got an honorable mention too, but that chicken. We all decided to order a box of chicken for the ride back to Atlanta. There was construction when we visited and wasn’t easily accessible. Its not hard to miss this restaurant as it’s in the very back of a restaurant row. I’ll be visiting each time I’m in Birmingham.
Get the hot version of the catfish platter (not too hot and not too mild). And the seasoned french fries. It's worth writing home about. You might have to eat at Eugene's twice in one day.
It's that good.
The flavor in their food is unbelievable.
