If you've never experienced Ethiopian food, Zemam's should be your first stop. It will be come the benchmark you measure every Ethiopian meal you eat by. It's in a tiny little house in the redeveloping Broadway Bungalow stretch east of downtown Tucson. Nothing fancy, just sweet, wonderful people cooking and serving authentic North African dishes. Try a big platter of stewed meats (lamb, beef and chicken are tender and not too spicy) and traditional vegetables. Add yellow split peas, collards, and roasted cauliflower, tear off a piece of fresh injera bread made from teff, and start scooping.
It's ok, not bad food, just not my favorite cuisine. I prefer eating with utensils and have my own plate, rather than everyone smearing food from the pie tin in the center. The bread you swipe with, was slightly spongy and I felt bloated later. It's worth experiencing one time.
Great, delicious Ethiopian food. Generous portions. All the dishes I have tried so far have all been good. Don't be afraid to try the spicy ones!
Tried 2 veggie dishes and all meat dishes minus the spicy bone in chicken. Every food item was delicious with a distinct savory sauce. The meats were incredibly tender. The bread was soft, spongy and just perfect for mopping up the sauce. If we're ever in town again, would love to return.
First experience with ethiopian food, it was all amazing. Don't go spicy if you don't want really spicy! Iced tea wonderful. I will definitely be back.
