The people at Umai Savory Hot Dogs are masterful mavens of the Hot Dog genera, taking the ordinary wiener and turning them into works of edible art.
Founded in the 1990's in San Jose, California, the first restaurant was actually a Hot Dog cart. From what I read, the founders had no idea how to run a Hot Dog business and experimented along the way combining different items and flavors until what we have today. With a focus on fresh ingredients, prime cut meats, and no artificial additives, they've done an amazing job.
I recently came to Umai in Rancho Cucamonga and had their California Bae and Hawaiian Bang Bang. Both were terrific, and both were as different as day and night. The California was light, mild, and tasted healthy. Every bite was like doing Yoga and saving the rainforest at the same time. It featured a chiken dog topped with cucumbers, avocados, a cream sauce, and Feta cheese. The Hawaiian, on the other hand, had bold flavors and bites. It featured a Polish dog topped with pineapple, bacon, and other things over Hawaiian sweet bread. Every bite was like surfing a monstrous wave. Both dogs were really good, for me the Hawaiian was better.
