Friendly hostess. Good crab cakes. Clam chowder in bread bowl average. Lobster small-ish. Nice view of water and boat docks. Dining area on second floor peaceful vs loud, hectic pedestrian traffic outside. Two bee hives buzzing with bees on second story deck opposite dining windows (odd but interesting). Building old/classic. Best feature= location.
Service was really nice. We were seated (12) quite quickly for a lunch at just before 2pm and did not have any issues getting a table or getting our food at a reasonable speed. The food was on the more pricey side but I think that this was due to the location, as you have a view of the harbor. The food was decent, nothing to rave about in my opinion. I had the linguine with clams ($26) and it was tasty, but I do not think it should have coated $26. The white wine sauce did not cover the pasta but it was a tasty sauce, but having it sit in the bottom of the bowl sort of undermined the point of it. The clams were well cooked so no complaint there. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal and as I said the service was very good and all members of staff were very friendly. I reckon that a little bit of garnish on my pasta would have been nice too, pulling the dish together and completing it.
I love The Grotto Restaurant. The Grotto was newly renovated in the last couple of years. I remember when my parents use to bring us here as a kid. Or when ever friends or family came to visit my parents took them to Grotto #9. The Grotto hasn't really changed that much. It still has out standing food like always and a view of the Wharf. The Grotto is one of the premier restaurants on the Wharf. And has been a staple of the Wharf and the City for as long as I can remember. Which is over 65 years. Give them a try. You won't go wrong.
UPSTAIRS GROTTO was fantastic newly renovated, clean and great service. Food was very good. Jesus our waiter was very friendly and attentive. Expect to pay more as you are in a major tourist location. In my opinion worth it as I left a nearby restaurant after being ignored for over 10 minutes. Everyone from the greeter in front to the hostess upstairs was very friendly.
Beautifully decorated seafood restaurant/Bar. The food was pretty pricey but I'd expect most seafood places to be.. otherwise the food was cooked perfectly and tasted fantastic! And to top it off, the service was very, very pleasant. Both our server and the Host who gave us a better overview of the menu were more then welcoming. It is now one of my favorite places to go when I come back to San Fran.
