Pretty standard diner style breakfast. What makes it good is the sweet owner and how fast you get your food.
Old school greasy spoon fun. These places are disappearing fast in SF. Great price and chill spot with attentive service.
Straight up old school Mission Cafe style restaurant. Sat at the long bar table because he had no table person to wait on us. It was cool, I dont remember the last time I sat the long bar to eat. There where literally only two workers, the cook and his assistant. The food was hella basic, I had chicken fried steak with eggs and hashbrowns. The gravy on the steak was a bit on the salty side. The steak was ehh and and the hash brown I noticed where sliced up potatoes vs being your regular shredded looking hash browns. The toast was very small too and The coffee also was very bland, nothing special. I would think the meal would be maybe $8 was I was surprised it to be upwards of $10-12 pp. I dont think I'll be going back to Al's, for a dollar or two more I can probably enjoy a better quality food around the Mission.
This place is great. The food is not over the top, just solid, reliable breakfast (I've never had the lunch but I imagine it's quite good). The owners are lovely and there's never a line - making the dining experience pretty relaxing and paced well. Food comes out quick but they do seem to have a lot of takeout orders, so it can back up slightly sometimes.
It's a great place to make your regular spot.
Food is good but portions are on the smaller side. The waitress is sweet and very attentive it's the owner who rubs me the wrong way. He snatches the waitress's tips from the table when she's busy elsewhere and if you don't pay immediately after finishing your meal, say you want to enjoy your coffee, he'll hang around your table until either the mean green or plastic is put on the tray. Then he snatches that up too! He has a way of making your breakfast experience stressful.
